Detailed Description
Students are introduced to the principles and fundamental processes
of arc welding, oxy-fuel cutting, power units and their controls.
Emphasis is placed on the safe setup and operation of oxy-fuel
welding and cutting equipment. In the labs, students practice with
oxy-fuel cutting/welding equipment.
Students participate in demonstrations, lab bases activities,
interactive lectures and discussions.

Course Critical Performance and Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have
demonstrated the ability to safely operate hand held oxy-fuel
equipment to perform basic welding tasks.
1.Follow the recommended procedures for placement, setup, and
shutdown of the oxy-fuel cutting and welding apparatus.
2.Safely operate a hand held oxy-fuel cutting torch to perform hole
piercing, straight line, bevel, and slope cutting of mild steel
plate.
3.Run lines of fusion on corner joints in 2F and 3F positions.
4.Weld lap joints on 10-11 gauge mild steel in 2F, and 3F positions.
5.Weld and braze weld T fillet joints on 10-11 gauge mild steel in 2F
and 3F positions.
6.Weld and braze weld butt joints on 10-11 gauge mild steel in 1G and
3G positions.
7.Perform straight line cut, bevel and pierce 3/8 mild steel plate
to specified dimensions.
8.Describe the characteristics and handling procedures for oxy-fuel
gases.
9.Describe the functions of oxy-fuel cutting and welding components.
10.Describe the use, care, and maintenance of oxy-fuel cutting and
welding components.
11.Describe the causes and preventative measures for backfires,
flashbacks, and burn-backs.
12.Explain what filler rods and fluxes are and how they are used.
13.Perform all activities in the welding lab in accordance with
health and safety rules and regulations.
