Section I Notes: This is 70-hour online course offered through Cisco Network Academy. Students must achieve at least a 75%. The online course is a Centennial College course that is offered through Sheridan CAPS. Students who register for the course through Sheridan will receive credit from Sheridan College only. Access to the course materials will be through OntarioLearn.com.

 
 
Section II: Course Details

Detailed Description
Introduction to Networks covers networking architecture, structure, and functions. The course introduces the principles and structure of IP addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations to provide a foundation for the curriculum. This is the first of two courses that will prepare you to for the Cisco® Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) exam or the first of four if you want to take the Cisco® Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Routing and Switching certification.

Learning Outcomes:

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Describe the devices and services used to support communications in data networks and the Internet
  2. Describe the role of protocol layers in data networks
  3. Describe the importance of addressing and naming schemes at various layers of data networks in IPv4 and IPv6 environments
  4. Design, calculate, and apply subnet masks and addresses to fulfill given requirements in IPv4 and IPv6 networks
  5. Explain fundamental Ethernet concepts such as media, services, and operations
  6. Build a simple Ethernet network using routers and switches
  7. Use Cisco command-line interface (CLI) commands to perform basic router and switch configurations
  8. Utilize common network utilities to verify small network operations and analyze data traffic
  9. Describe the roles and responsibilities of a network technician / technologist.
