Section II: Course Details

Detailed Description
Students explore the basic theoretical concepts and duties of the medical office clerk. Key topics include the medical office clerk responsibilities, health and the individual, standards and safety in healthcare, communicating in healthcare, procedures and guidelines of safety for various healthcare practice settings, appointment scheduling and meetings, patient care management, and health information privacy and confidentiality. A central component of this course is practical application and utilization of Accuro QHR patient care management software. Through Accuro QHR, students learn patient entry/query, scheduling and appointment, medical billing in compliance to Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), and patient care documentation. Medical billing procedures beyond Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) will include Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) and Private Billing Procedures. A strong emphasis is placed on Ministry of Health rules and regulations.

Course Critical Performance and Learning Outcomes

  Critical Performance:
By the end of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability to apply key healthcare care administrative procedures and complete key electronic health records processes of entry/query, scheduling/appointments, billing, and data management using Accuro QHR.
Learning Outcomes:

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Evaluate the responsibilities of the medical office clerk within the context of medical and health office operations.
  2. Identify how changes in health status affect the behavior of clients, including awareness of cultural differences, to provide patient-centered and supportive customer service.
  3. Describe effective communication tools and strategies used in medical office environments.
  4. Discuss the Canadian healthcare system principles of health care administration, services, financing, and delivery.
  5. Prepare and maintain general healthcare practice financial accounting to support fiscal health of a medical clinic.
  6. Apply different scheduling and booking techniques used in healthcare practice settings to keep appointment timelines organized and efficient.
  7. Perform health records management and health information management practices in compliance with privacy and confidentiality regulations.
  8. Utilize Accuro QHR patient care management software for patient care management focusing on patient entry/query; medical billing in compliance with Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP); scheduling and appointment; health information management; and WSIB and private practice medical claims and processing.

Evaluation Notes and Academic Missed Work Procedure:
TEST AND ASSIGNMENT PROTOCOL The following protocol applies to every course offered by Continuing and Professional Studies. 1. Students are responsible for staying abreast of test dates and times, as well as due dates and any special instructions for submitting assignments and projects as supplied to the class by the instructor. 2. Students must write all tests at the specified date and time. Missed tests, in-class/online activities, assignments and presentations are awarded a mark of zero. The penalty for late submission of written assignments is a loss of 10% per day for up to five business days (excluding Sundays and statutory holidays), after which, a grade of zero is assigned. Business days include any day that the college is open for business, whether the student has scheduled classes that day or not. An extension or make-up opportunity may be approved by the instructor at his or her discretion.
