Land Acknowledgement

Section II: Course Details

Detailed Description
Students analyze emerging trends and research on nutrition and wellness to understand the beneficial impact of dietary choices and strategies to reduce stress and enhance relaxation. This course will focus on the importance of evaluating what we eat and why maintaining a healthy weight and reducing toxins is critical for overall wellbeing. Students will explore the changing physical and emotional needs of the body at various life stages and the impact of environmental and socioeconomic factors on overall health and wellbeing. Students will learn how to identify misleading versus credible health information to gain a stronger understanding of the changing wellness landscape in both popular media and the field of science.

Course Critical Performance and Learning Outcomes

  Critical Performance:
By the end of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability to analyze emerging trends and research regarding nutrition, stress reduction, and environmental factors to support healthy choices.
 
Learning Outcomes:

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Understand the impact and influence of macro, micro and other nutrients within the body to facilitate healthier decision-making regarding diet and nutrition.
  2. Recognize how weight management and disease prevention for an individual is influenced by their own body's metabolic rates and other unique factors.
  3. Utilize new, evidence-based research to inform the creation of health and wellness plans that focus on diet, stress reduction and enhanced relaxation.
  4. Assess changes in an individual's nutritional requirements at various life stages to support general health and wellness.
  5. Evaluate the credibility of various emerging nutrition and wellness endorsements and diet plans or strategies to ensure safe and efficacious practices.
  6. Determine the influence of economic and socio-cultural factors when planning and implementing a wellness plan.

Evaluation Notes and Academic Missed Work Procedure:
TEST AND ASSIGNMENT PROTOCOL The following protocol applies to every course offered by Continuing and Professional Studies. 1. Students are responsible for staying abreast of test dates and times, as well as due dates and any special instructions for submitting assignments and projects as supplied to the class by the instructor. 2. Students must write all tests at the specified date and time. Missed tests, in-class/online activities, assignments and presentations are awarded a mark of zero. The penalty for late submission of written assignments is a loss of 10% per day for up to five business days (excluding Sundays and statutory holidays), after which, a grade of zero is assigned. Business days include any day that the college is open for business, whether the student has scheduled classes that day or not. An extension or make-up opportunity may be approved by the instructor at his or her discretion.
