Land Acknowledgement

Sheridan College resides on land that has been, and still is, the traditional territory of several Indigenous nations, including the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We recognize this territory is covered by the Dish with One Spoon treaty and the Two Row Wampum treaty, which emphasize the importance of joint stewardship, peace, and respectful relationships.

As an institution of higher learning Sheridan embraces the critical role that education must play in facilitating real transformational change. We continue our collective efforts to recognize Canada's colonial history and to take steps to meaningful Truth and Reconciliation.

Section II: Course Details

Detailed Description
Students explore systematic approaches to cardiac rhythm and dysrhythmia analysis (using a one and two lead system) within the context of unique and variable client and situational factors. Through accurate client assessment and utilization of evidence-informed practices and standards, students achieve critical reasoning and decision-making skills to effectively plan and prioritize nursing and interprofessional care. Students participate in rhythm analysis practice activities, feedback quizzes, virtual instructor-led discussions, case scenarios, and independent and group work. Acute Coronary Syndromes, cardiac pacemakers, and current trends in cardiovascular nursing are examined.

  Critical Performance:
By the end of this course students will have demonstrated the ability to analyze cardiac rhythms and dysrhythmias utilizing continuous monitoring systems to plan safe, holistic and evidence-based nursing and interprofessional care.

Learning Outcomes:

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Apply an advanced knowledge of cardiac and autonomic nervous system anatomy, physiology, and electrophysiology to the nursing process when providing preventative and restorative care.
  2. Examine relevant physical, psychosocial, cultural and other pertinent assessment data to create a plan of care that is holistic and achieves client and team goals.
  3. Describe the nursing considerations and responsibilities associated with cardiovascular diagnostic and lab evaluations.
  4. Integrate key details from published clinical standards and research to implement safe and effective inpatient continuous electrocardiographic monitoring.
  5. Analyze cardiac rhythms using a systematic and organized approach that incorporates client data and situational factors to identify alterations in client well-being and stability.
  6. Incorporate evidence-based standards and best practices to provide care for clients at risk for, or experiencing, symptoms of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS).
  7. Evaluate the functioning of permanent pacemakers and initiate the use of a temporary pacing device as required to maintain client hemodynamic stability.
  8. Apply critical thinking and decision-making skills by synthesizing data from a range of sources to plan and prioritize nursing interventions and interprofessional care.
