Land Acknowledgement

Section II: Course Details

Detailed Description
Students explore basic communication skills including grammar, syntax, pronunciation and vocabulary in realistic and authentic situations. Through dialogues, role play, aural activities (dictations, video, music), laboratory exercises (pronunciation, listening, comprehension) and individual oral presentations students learn proper verbs and commonly used expressions to participate in everyday conversations about food, household chores, errands and travel.

Course Critical Performance and Learning Outcomes

  Critical Performance:
By the end of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability to communicate using simple Spanish expressions and structures.
 
Learning Outcomes:

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Build up new vocabulary and idiomatic expressions to be used in social settings.
  2. Participate in conversations about celebrations, family, food and grocery shopping using the fundamentals of grammar.
  3. Demonstrate a better knowledge of cultural customs in the Spanish-speaking world and an appreciation of some cultural differences and similarities.
  4. Write simple paragraphs on familiar topics with sufficient clarity.

Lesson 4: Una celebración (A celebration)

Presentation of course outline and evaluation plan.

Vocabulary related to lesson 4. 

Verbs with irregular first-person “yo” (I) forms.

Uses of the verbs “saber" and “conocer” (to know).

Personal “a” and contractions “al” and “del”.

Present indicative of the irregular verbs “ir” (to go), “dar” (to give) and “estar” (to be).

“Ir a” + infinitive. 

Talk about family and discuss plans for a party.

Learn to conjugate verbs with irregular first-person forms and participate in conversations using the present indicative. 

Identify the uses of “saber” and “conocer”. 

Recognize the use of personal “a” and contractions.

Explain what you are going to do. 

Learn to conjugate the irregular verbs “ir”, “dar” and “estar” by participating in conversations using the present indicative. 

Review: Students participate in conversations (pair work & small groups), and in a variety of interactive activities based on vocabulary, grammar structures and topics studied in Lesson 4. Read and answer questions about dialogues, and

Review: Students participate in conversations (pair work & small groups), and in a variety of interactive activities based on vocabulary, grammar structures and topics studied in Lesson 5. Read and answer questions about dialogues and resolve

situations of real life based on those dialogues.

Lesson 6: En el mercado (At the market)

Vocabulary related to lesson 6.

Stem-changing verbs: “o”  “ue”.

Direct object pronouns.

Affirmative and negative expressions.

Expression: “Hace… que”.

How to shop for groceries in supermarkets and specialty stores.

Identify the use of pronouns to avoid repetition.
