Land Acknowledgement

Detailed Description
Learn how to speak, read, and write Spanish at an introductory level. Develop conversational skills in a variety of real-life situations. Enhance your language skills through interactive and engaging activities including grammar and vocabulary exercises, dialogues, readings, group discussions, role plays and presentations. Use video and audio materials to enhance your comprehension of different accents.

Course Critical Performance and Learning Outcomes

  Critical Performance:
By the end of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability to communicate in Spanish at a basic level.
 
Learning Outcomes:

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Use a vocabulary of approximately 800 words.
  2. Learn the fundamentals of Spanish grammar.
  3. Read a variety of articles, signs, menus, advertisements.
  4. Write at an introductory level.
  5. Participate in simple conversations about a variety of subjects.

Evaluation Notes and Academic Missed Work Procedure:
Test and Assignment Protocol The following protocol applies to every course offered by Continuing and Professional Studies. 1. Students are responsible for staying abreast of test dates and times, as well as due dates and any special instructions for submitting assignments and projects as supplied to the class by the instructor. 2. Students must write all tests at the specified date and time. Missed tests, in-class/online activities, assignments and presentations are awarded a mark of zero. The penalty for late submission of written assignments is a loss of 10% per day for up to five business days (excluding Sundays and statutory holidays), after which, a grade of zero is assigned. Business days include any day that the college is open for business, whether the student has scheduled classes that day or not. An extension or make-up opportunity may be approved by the instructor at his or her discretion.

Preliminary Lesson: Brief conversations

Presentation of course outline and evaluation plan.

Most common greetings and farewells in Spanish.

Vocabulary, Spanish alphabet, cognates, interrogative words.

How to introduce oneself, greet and say good-bye to others.

How to say and spell first and last names.

Review: Students participate in brief conversations (in pairs & small groups) based on vocabulary and topics studied in Preliminary Lesson. Read and answer questions about short dialogues.

Lesson 1: ¡En la universidad!

Vocabulary related to Lesson 1. 

Gender of nouns - part I and plural forms of nouns, definite and indefinite articles, adjectives, agreement of articles, nouns and adjectives.

Subject pronouns, colours, cardinal numbers 0 – 40, nationalities. 

Present indicative of the verb “ser” (to be). 

How to resolve situations by identifying objects and people using masculine, feminine, singular and plural articles as well as nouns and adjectives.

Identify subject pronouns and learn how to use them to address people.

How to ask for and give telephone numbers.

Give and request information regarding nationality and place of origin.

Name colours, use numbers and describe people. 

Particpate in Conservations using the present indicative of the verb "ser" (to be) . 

ReviewStudents participate in conversations (in pairs & small groups) and in a variety of interactive activities based on vocabulary and topics studied in Lesson 1. Answer questions about dialogues and resolve situations based on those dialogues.

Review: Students participate in conversations (in pairs & small groups) and in a variety of interactive activities based on vocabulary and topics studied in Lesson 2. Answer questions about dialogues and resolve situations based on those dialogues.

Lesson 3: En casa

Vocabulary related to Lesson 3. 

Present indicative of regular “-er” and “-ir” ending verbs.

Possession with “de”.

Present indicative of irregular verbs “tener” (to have) and “venir” (to come).

Expressions with “tener”.

Demonstrative adjectives and pronouns.

Talk about a weekend at home and household chores 

Learn to conjugate verbs ending in “-er” and “-ir” by participating in conversations using the present indicative of regular verbs.

Participate in dialogues with the Spanish possessive equivalent of the English apostrophe as well as demonstrative adjectives and pronouns.

Learn to conjugate some irregular verbs by participating in conversations using the present indicative.

How to ask for prices when purchasing an item.

Review: Students participate in conversations (in pairs & small groups) and in a variety of interactive activities based on vocabulary and topics studied in Lesson 3. Answer questions about dialogues and resolve situations based on those dialogues.
