Section I Notes: This is a hybrid course. A hybrid course means course content, activities, assignments and evaluations are delivered by combining a face-to-face classroom experience with online mediated interaction and activity. Students will be provided a schedule for their in-class and online sessions. The first class will be in-class. The online portion of the course is asynchronous and offered through Sheridan's Learning and Teaching Environment (SLATE). Students can work through each module at their own pace as long as due dates are met. Online learning often involves assigned weekly readings, research, assignments, quizzes, and discussion boards. Students will need access to a computer and the internet.

 
 
Section II: Course Details

Detailed Description
Students practice performing the Telemedicine Facilitator role and responsibilities within the Telemedicine Facilitation Process, in the rapidly expanding health care industry. In this culminating course students integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, and capabilities developed in the prerequisite courses to work safely and in compliance with the Delegation of Controlled Acts policy of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Students continue to apply the Telemedicine Facilitation Principles of Standard of Care, Scope of Practice, Qualifications, Training and Experience, and Delegation. Students build competency and proficiency in all stages of the Telemedicine Facilitation Process (Open Telemedicine Office, Check Appointments, Set-Up Telemedicine Room, Set-Up Waiting Room, Intake of Patient, Patient in Telemedicine Room, Doctor Remotely Examines Patient, Telemedicine Session Conclusion, and Close Telemedicine Office) and associated, workflows, procedures, and best practices. Through articles, videos, group work, presentations, case study, role play, simulations, practice in groups, assignments, online tests and hands-on exercises with the telemedicine software and Electronic Health Record (EHR) students will explore and be evaluated on the Telemedicine Facilitator role and related procedures and best practices. Students build competency and proficiency through instructional videos, live demonstrations, simulations, practice within groups including hands-on with simulators and role-play activities, peer feedback, and instructor evaluations. Students will work with the typical equipment, telemedicine and EHR software, devices, and supplies used in a telemedicine room. Throughout this course, the Telemedicine Facilitation Principles, customer service, professional communications (including remote case presentation), relationship building, telemedicine system and devices preparation and technical troubleshooting will be emphasized to support an excellent standard of care.

This is a required course in the Telemedicine Facilitation - Sheridan Board Certificate program, offered through the Faculty of Continuing and Professional Studies. This course integrates and practically assess the knowledge, skills, and abilities provided in the previous prerequisite courses in the program.


Course Critical Performance and Learning Outcomes

  Critical Performance:
By the end of this course, students will have demonstrated the abilityto perform the key procedures of the Telemedicine Office, Check Appointments, Set-Up telemedicine Room, Set-Up Waiting Room, Intake of Patient, Patient in Telemedicine Room, Doctor Remotely Examines Patient, Telemedicine Session Conclusion, and Close Telemedicine Office.
 
Learning Outcomes:

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Interpret the Delegation of Controlled Acts policy of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
  2. Interpret how the Telemedicine Facilitation Principles (Standard of Care, Scope of Practice, Qualifications, Training and Experience, and Delegation) apply to the Telemedicine Facilitator role and related procedures.
  3. Show competence and proficiency, including customer service and professional relationship building skills, in the application of all the stages of the Telemedicine Facilitation Process (Open Telemedicine Office, Check Appointments, Set-Up Telemedicine Room, Set-Up Waiting Room, Intake of Patient, Patient in Telemedicine Room, Doctor Remotely Examines Patient, Telemedicine Session Conclusion, and Close Telemedicine Office) and associated workflows, procedures, and best practices, in primary care settings.
  4. Employ appropriate human anatomy references and medical terms, when gathering information from patients, remotely presenting cases to doctors, and communicating with both patients and doctors.
