Section II: Course Details

Detailed Description
Students learn to inspect the interior water supply and distribution systems (including fixtures and faucets), in a residential dwelling. Students also learn to inspect water heating equipment, drain/vent/waste systems and their related fixtures.

Course Critical Performance and Learning Outcomes

	Critical Performance:
	By the end of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability to successfully determine the current status of a plumbing system in a residential dwelling.

Learning Outcomes:

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

Inspect the following to identify type, material, condition, safety concerns and other issues: water supply distribution systems; fixtures and faucets; drain, waste and vent systems; water heating systems and their fuel storage and distribution systems; drainage sumps, sump pumps and sewage ejection pumps and related piping.
Identify the common problems that apply to each plumbing component named as well as the causes and implications of each problem.
Describe the inspection procedures involved with each component.
Define and use proper terminology related to plumbing.

Evaluation Notes and Academic Missed Work Procedure:

Since this is a professional subject, marking standards reinforce professional practice by demanding legible, tidy work. Written assignments should be well organized and grammatically correct, with proper spelling and punctuation. Late assignments may be penalized.  

To attain a passing grade for the subject, a student must complete and obtain a passing grade on all combined assignments and tests (term work) and also a passing grade on the final exam. 50% is a passing grade.

Note: A minimum grade of 70% in all Home Inspection courses is required by the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI) for the Registered Home Inspector (RHI) designation.

- supply plumbing system goals and performance

Water Heaters
- fuel supply and viewing systems: gas-fired water heaters, oil-fired water heaters, electric water heaters
- conventional tank type water heaters
- high efficiency gas water heaters
- combination systems
- tankless coils

Drain, Waste and Vent Plumbing
- drain piping materials: traps, floor drains
- venting systems: sewage ejector pumps, sump pumps
- laundry tub pumps

Plumbing Fixtures and Faucets
- basins, sinks and laundry tubs, faucets, toilets
- bidets, bathtubs, tub and shower stall enclosures
- shower stalls, whirlpool baths
