Detailed Description
Students learn about installed heating systems (gas and oil furnaces and hot water boilers). Emphasis is on the inspector's ability to identify the energy source, type, material, condition and safety concerns as well as inspecting the heating equipment. Students must purchase course materials directly from the CarsonDunlop online bookstore or by phone.

Course Critical Performance and Learning Outcomes

  Critical Performance:
By the end of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability to identify the energy source, type, material, condition and safety concerns as well as inspecting the heating equipment in a residential dwelling.
 
Learning Outcomes:

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Inspect the following to identify type, material, condition, safety concerns and other issues: heating systems (gas-fired forced air, oil-fired forced air and hot water heating systems).
  2. Identify the common problems that apply to each heating system component named as well as the causes and implications of each problem.
  3. Describe the inspection procedures involved with each component.
  4. Define and use proper terminology related to the above named heating systems.

Evaluation Notes and Academic Missed Work Procedure:
Since this is a professional subject, marking standards reinforce professional practice by demanding legible, tidy work. Written assignments should be well organized and grammatically correct, with proper spelling and punctuation. Late assignments are penalized. Please obtain standards, dates and additional information from your instructor. To attain a passing grade for the subject, a student must complete and obtain a passing grade on all combined assignments and tests (term work) and also a passing grade on the final exam. 50% is a passing grade. Note: A minimum grade of 70% in all Home Inspection courses is required by the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI) for the Registered Home Inspector (RHI) designation.

Evaluation Notes and Academic Missed Work Procedure:
TEST AND ASSIGNMENT PROTOCOL The following protocol applies to every course offered by Continuing and Professional Studies. 1. Students are responsible for staying abreast of test dates and times, as well as due dates and any special instructions for submitting assignments and projects as supplied to the class by the instructor. 2. Students must write all tests at the specified date and time. Missed tests, in-class/online activities, assignments and presentations are awarded a mark of zero. The penalty for late submission of written assignments is a loss of 10% per day for up to five business days (excluding Sundays and statutory holidays), after which, a grade of zero is assigned. Business days include any day that the college is open for business, whether the student has scheduled classes that day or not. An extension or make-up opportunity may be approved by the instructor at his or her discretion.
