Detailed Description
This course is designed to provide the student with an introduction to makeup theory and basic application techniques. Learn style techniques and makeup application methods, with an emphasis on subtle, skillful applications. Start from basic introductory level makeup and work up towards more sophisticated makeup styles. Through hands-on practice, students learn basic skincare, skin preparation, brow-filling, false lashes, contouring, highlighting, and more. The cost of a makeup kit has been factored into the course price. (approximately $300.00 CAN). Material fees are non-refundable after the start date of the course.

Course Critical Performance and Learning Outcomes

  Critical Performance:
By the end of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability to apply basic makeup techniques on their own visage.
 
Learning Outcomes:

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Recognize the physiology and structure of the face.
  2. Analyze basic makeup styles.
  3. Apply basic makeup styles on your own visage and on a model.
  4. Understand basic skincare and colour theory.
  5. Display colour corrective techniques.
  6. Select and utilize appropriate makeup products, equipment, and tools.
  7. Demonstrate techniques such as contouring, highlighting, eye shadow, mascaras, foundation application, etc.

Evaluation Notes and Academic Missed Work Procedure:
WRITTEN TESTS: Will be compromised of any of the following: short answer, fill in the blanks, true / false, multiple choice, short essay questions. PRACTICAL TESTS: Requirements of practical tests involve the students completing a practical makeup application of the instructors choice. PRACTICAL WORK ASSESSMENT: The purpose of conducting lab / practical work within the program is to offer the student the opportunity to develop and practice skills discussed in class. Students will be graded on attendance, cleanliness of station, cleanliness of makeup products and tools, etc. This component of the course evaluation assumes full mark value will be assigned and that the students inability to develop the skills outlined will result in a deduction of marks from a possible total of 15%. This 15% can be broken down in the following ways: 1 TECHNICAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT (7.5%): This refers to the student's ability to demonstrate ongoing development of skills and techniques being discussed in class. It includes manipulation of makeup tools, supplies, and equipment; physical application and makeup placement; appropriate product choice; personal care and presentation; and product maintenance. 2 BUSINESS SKILLS DEVELOPMENT (7.5%): This area refers to the students ability to develop a business like and professional demeanour within the classroom setting. This includes: appropriate dress and makeup, effective time management, leadership ability, knowledge of class, station setup, and procedures; commitment to further develop skills through ongoing practice inside and outside of class.

MODULE 1: Welcome and Introduction

  • Introduction to the course
  • Overview of course objectives and course outline
  • Overview of lab safety and cleanliness guidelines 
  • Introduction to hygiene and sanitation
  • Small overview of history and use of makeup

MODULE 2: Basic Skincare

  • Learn about different types of skin
  • Overview of skincare products and their beneficial use
  • Skin: function, structure, anatomy
  • Discussion of skin conditions (i.e. sensitive skin, acne, etc)
  • Introduction to proper skin cleansing techniques
  • Practice time on how to properly prepare skin for makeup application

MODULE 3: Introduction to Colour Theory and Facial Makeup

  • Introduction to colour theory and the colour wheel
  • Discussion of foundation and concealer and their uses
  • Differentiation between foundation types, foundation formulas, foundation application
  • Introduction to colour correcting skin tones
  • Practice time on how to properly apply foundation, concealer, colour correction, and powder

MODULE 4: Colour, Highlighting, Blush

  • Introduction to contouring the face based on shape
  • Introduction to highlighting the face based on shape
  • Introduction to blush based on shape
  • Introduction to bronzer and where and when to apply
  • Practice time on how to properly apply contouring, highlight, blush, and bronzer

MODULE 5: Eye Makeup

  • Introduction to classic eye shadow application and shading
  • Discussion of eye shape, eye lines, and eye anatomy
  • Introduction to different types of eyeliner - liquid, pencil, eye shadow, etc 
  • Introduction to the use of mascara
  • Practice time on how to properly apply eye makeup including shadow, liner, mascara

MODULE 6: Basic Eyebrows

  • Importance of brows and brow grooming
  • Discussion of brow grooming equipment
  • Review of shaping the eyebrows with makeup
  • Practice time on how to properly groom and shape brows with makeup; complete a full eye look including eyebrows

MODULE 7: Practice Time

  • Practice time to create a makeup look based on what has been learnt

MODULE 8: Practical Test #1

  • First PRACTICAL TEST on scenario of instructors choice

MODULE 9: Basic False Lash Application

  • Learn how to curl lashes using equipment
  • Discuss the techniques of 'tight lining' the eyelid
  • Understand the purpose of using false lashes
  • Discussion of different types of false lashes
  • Practice applying false lashes (strip lashes)
  • WRITTEN TEST #1 completed

MODULE 10: Lips and Lipsticks

  • Lipstick styles throughout the decades
  • Lipstick tricks and tips
  • Discussion and practice of the use of lip liner
  • Practice time on how to apply lip liner and lipstick 

MODULE 11: Advanced Eye Shadow Techniques

  • A look into more advanced and technical based eye shadow techniques including smoky eye
  • Practice time on how to apply smoky eyes

MODULE 12: Full Makeup Application

  • Practice time on how to apply a makeup look from start to finish 

MODULE 13: Practical Test #2

  • Final PRACTICAL TEST based on scneario of instructors choice
