Land Acknowledgement

Section II: Course Details

Detailed Description
Following a brief overview of translating tools and resources, and of English and French reading material, the course concentrates on the development of basic knowledge and skills essential to the task of translating, including: French grammar, spelling, writing; translation techniques, research, vocabulary building and comprehension, as well as general knowledge. Translating and French exercises are incorporated throughout the course with a view to solidify learning and improve translating skills.

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Demonstrate ability to apply French grammar, spelling and writing rules in the context of translating, with a focus on nouns and adjectives.
  2. Analyse basic French texts with a view to developing vocabulary, respecting text format and learning how to properly formulate sentences in translations.
  3. Demonstrate ability to comprehend and analyse basic English texts.
  4. Apply basic translating techniques and knowledge in the context of translating.
  5. Demonstrate appropriate use of translating tools and resources.
  6. Use technology to produce error-free and well-formatted translations.
  7. Apply research skills to improve general knowledge in various areas.
  8. Reflect on learning and progress to solidify learning.

Week 1:   Introduction:  resources, French keyboard, setting document language in Word

Week 2:   Proper and common nouns, reading strategies, bilingual dictionaries

Week 3:   Simple and compound noun, fonts in Word, translation units

Week 4:   Individual and collective nouns, reading text, English plural nouns, uppercase

Week 5:   Definite and indefinite articles, author's intent, finding vocabulary

Week 6:   Article contractions, search feature for web pages, reading English text for understanding

Week 7:   Demonstrative articles and pronouns, homophones, differences between English & French

Week 8:   Possessive articles and pronouns, homophones, differences between possessive and definite article use in English and French.

Week 9:   Adjective and agreement, translating "available"

Week 10:  Exclamatory and interrogative articles, synonyms in Word, translating "which/such"

Week 11:  Other indefinite articles, numeral articles, correct working, concision

Week 12:  Adjective position and meaning, syntax, translation analysis

Week 13:  Difficult words or expressions, homophones, text explanation

Week 14:  Final Exam - Taken Online
