Section I Notes: This is a Sheridan College course that is offered through Sheridan CAPS. Students who register for the course through Sheridan will receive credit from Sheridan College only. Access to the course materials will be through OntarioLearn.com. This is a web-based course. To take this course, students will need reliable access to the Internet. They should have a basic level of comfort using computers as well as self-discipline to work online. This course is taught entirely online. Students can expect to spend an additional 3hrs/wk for online postings, discussions, and homework.

Detailed Description
Learn to construct, practice and analyze a variety of communication strategies. Develop a communication portfolio, related to the responsibilities of a supervisor/administrator in Early Childhood Environments.

Within the context of the program, this course is one of the required courses in the Supervision and Administration in Early Learning and Care Programs Ontario College Graduate Certificate program within the Faculty of Continuing and Professional Studies.


Course Critical Performance and Learning Outcomes

  Critical Performance:
By the end of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability to apply effective written and professional communication strategies, practiced by supervisors and administrators in an Early Learning and Care Programs.
 
Learning Outcomes:

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Analyze the nature and importance of business writing in a professional manner.
  2. Evaluate a variety of written to use, business reports, letters, program brochures, media releases, newsletters, parent and staff communiqués, policies/procedures, and business proposals as examples, for a professional portfolio.
  3. Use a weekly communication dialogue blog to develop professional communication techniques for the Early Childhood classroom and workplace.
  4. Analyze the Occupational Standards for Child Care Administrators considered important for managing quality communication in Early Learning and Care Programs.
  5. Compare various examples of verbal and written communication to situations that can occur in the workplace.
  6. Apply a process of self-reflection to evaluate communication effectiveness with children and staff in the workplace to affect change.
