Land Acknowledgement

Course Critical Performance and Learning Outcomes

  Critical Performance:
By the end of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability to create a dynamic page of sequential art and the tools to develop a comic or graphic novel.
 
Learning Outcomes:

To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Use observational and life drawing as core tools to develop characters and environments.
  2. Create story ideas and generate concepts for comics and graphic novels.
  3. Thumbnail and plan a sequence of comic art in pencil.
  4. Use ink and color to create a finalized page of sequential art.

Course Details:
Module 1: drawing from observation
Part one of the workshop is the development of observational drawing in a studio environment. This experience will form the foundation for visual observation and will be used to develop characters and environments for a comic or graphic novel proposal 
 
1.     Drawing models/specimens
Students will learn how to draw from life to better understand form and movement, adding a degree of realism to their cartooning.
 
Module 2: development of concepts for a comic or graphic novel
Students will develop and critique ideas and concepts for sequential art projects, taking at least one page to final stages.
 
2.     Ideation process 
Students brainstorm ideas through drawings that can lead to a story concept. Publishing options discussed and explained. 
 
3.     Layout and comic page design 
Students begin the work of breaking down an idea into sequential panels, with proper pacing and setting.
 
4.     Inking and lettering
Students learn various inking techniques to bring their work to a polished, final stage. Digital and hand lettering discussed.
